The Gift That Keeps Blooming

Years ago, my youngest sister dug up a small piece of one of her peony plants and handed it to me. It wasn't much to look at—just a humble start with the promise of something beautiful. Knowing my track record with plants, she was probably taking a bit of a chance.

I've never claimed to have a green thumb. In fact, I've unintentionally loved more plants to death than I care to admit. But somehow, this peony decided to thrive.

What started as one small division has grown into a full, healthy bush that greets me each June with dozens of spectacular blooms. Every year, I look forward to cutting a few stems to bring indoors. I also get one of life's simple pleasures: sharing them with others.

I like to cut the flowers while they're still partially closed—just beginning to soften. They may not look like much at first, but by the next morning they've transformed. Those tightly wrapped buds unfold into enormous blossoms that fill an entire vase with color, fragrance, and beauty. Every time I hand someone three or four stems, I know they're about to witness a little bit of magic.

It reminds me that generosity works the same way.

My sister probably had no idea that sharing one small piece of her garden would one day allow me to brighten someone else's home. One simple act of kindness multiplied into something neither of us could have measured at the time.

There's another part of the peony's story that often goes unnoticed.

If you've ever looked closely at peony buds, you've probably seen ants busily crawling all over them. They're drawn to the sweet nectar the buds produce, and while the flowers don't actually need the ants to bloom, the ants play their own quiet role in the life of the plant. They are part of the process, often helping keep other pests away while the bloom prepares to open.

It made me think about the people in our own lives.

Some people are like my sister—the ones willing to share what they have without expecting anything in return. Others are like the ants. They may never be the center of attention, but their quiet work behind the scenes helps beautiful things happen. Their contributions are easy to overlook, yet they matter.

Very few blessings come to full bloom because of one person alone.

As I cut armfuls of peonies each spring, I'm reminded that beauty often begins with someone else's generosity and grows through the unseen efforts of many others. What started as a single gift has become something I can continue passing along, one bouquet at a time.

Maybe that's how we're meant to live.

Share what we've been given.

Do the quiet work that no one notices.

Trust that even the smallest acts of kindness can bloom into something far bigger than we ever imagined.
